Why number the pages of a PDF
Page numbering is required in academic papers, legal filings, contracts, handbooks and reports. Beyond formality, it prevents confusion: with numbered pages, no one hands the document out of order or loses a sheet unnoticed. This tool writes the number straight onto the finished PDF, with no need to reopen the original editor.
Number position and format
You choose where the number appears — footer or header, aligned left, center or right — and the format: the number alone (1, 2, 3), with the total (1/12, 2/12), or with a label ("Page 1"). The "x/N" format is the most common in official documents because it shows at a glance how many pages there are, helping confirm the document is complete.
Right in your browser, file never uploaded
Numbering is applied locally, on your device: the PDF is never sent to any server and the result has no watermark. If the document is confidential, you can also combine numbering with a PDF watermark ("Confidential", "Draft") to reinforce identification on every sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering from something other than 1?
Yes. Use the "Start at" field — handy when the cover should not be counted or the document continues another one. E.g. starting at 0 makes the first page show 0.
Will the number cover page content?
The number is drawn in the margin (footer or header), outside the text area in most documents. If your PDF has edge-to-edge content, pick a position or size that avoids overlap.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
No. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first. The tool warns you when a file is protected, without freezing.
