How to create a strong password you can actually use

Most password advice is outdated. The rules sites impose produce passwords that are hard for humans and easy for computers.

What actually makes a password strong

Only one thing: how many attempts it would take to guess. And that depends far more on length than on character variety. A 16-character lowercase password has vastly more combinations than an 8-character one with symbols.

“P@ssw0rd!” protects nothing — cracking tools test the obvious substitutions first.

The passphrase strategy

Four or five randomly chosen words make a long, strong, memorable password. Phrases that make sense are much weaker, because language is predictable.

The mistake that cancels any good password

Reuse. When any site leaks, attackers replay that email and password everywhere — credential stuffing, the most common attack there is. Use a password manager and turn on two-factor authentication on email and banking.

Generating passwords that never travel

The Localside password generator uses the browser’s own cryptographic generator, so the password is created and stays on your device.
