Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

It is a personal-finance rule of thumb suggesting you withdraw about 4% of your portfolio per year in retirement, with a good chance the money lasts for decades. You can adjust this rate in the calculator to fit your profile.

Why use a real return?

A real return already subtracts inflation, so values stay in today’s purchasing power — easier to interpret. If you use a nominal return, remember future values will look larger than they are worth.

Does it include public pensions?

No. It projects only your own investments. Any public or private pension would be additional income to add on top of the sustainable income estimated here.
