Tune the intensity of the mark
You control the text, position, size and opacity. A large, diagonal, semi-transparent mark crosses the page without blocking reading — the standard for "confidential". For a subtle authorship signature, use smaller, lighter text in the footer. The goal is a mark visible enough to do its job but light enough not to disturb the reader.

Can I make it subtler or stronger?
Yes. Adjust the opacity (from a very subtle 12% to a bold 50%), the size and the color. A diagonal mark at 20% is usually readable without disturbing the document.
Does it work with any PDF?
